Outside of London expansion for the first time grand theft auto Video game, the series has settled into making fun of America ever since. Players have committed mass atrocities in fictional versions of New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, and there’s a simple reason for that: there’s no place like the good ol’ USA.
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar, revealed… Lex Friedman podcast that there’s a reason the series keeps returning to these iconic cities. Houser said:
“I think for the full GTA game, we always decided that there was a lot of Americana inherent in the IP, and it would be really difficult to make it work in London or anywhere else. You know, I needed weapons, and I needed these larger-than-life characters.”
The series has satirized America and Americana for a quarter-century, drawing on the country’s melting pot to serve as the backdrop to a slice of life joie de vivre that “almost resembles a kind of psychotic version of a (Charles) Dickens book.” The stories contain characters that seem cartoonishly, sometimes frighteningly, real.
But that’s what makes the series so fun, it makes fun of society by being ridiculous without having to make things up. American history and culture has a lot to offer game developers Cars we love to drive When we play help us determine the time and place.
It’s an essential part of the game’s identity. According to Houser, “I felt like the game was very much about America, perhaps from an outsider’s perspective. But that was so much about it that it wouldn’t have worked the same way anywhere else.”
