Ram separated from the Dodge brand earlier in 2009. The current lineup consists of pickup trucks and minivans. Ram does trucks well, too. It knows its customers, and the 1500 boasts what I consider to be a best-in-class interior and overall ride quality. The truck… gets the job done. Either way, the family will soon add another member. There is not only a Mid-sized pickup on the roadbut Ram will reportedly add an SUV to the mix by 2028.
Car News Reports Antonio Velosa, CEO of Stellantis, told Wall Street analysts that the automaker will soon bring an SUV to the market. The on-sale date is targeted for 2028. It will arrive with a choice between standard gas or an extended hybrid setup. Considering that Dodge has New Durango planned for 2029We won’t be shocked to see these two SUVs sharing the same platform.
Does Ram really need an SUV in its product lineup? After all, parent company Stellantis owns a number of brands that offer a wide range of SUVs. You’ve got everything from compact crossovers to full-size body-on-frame trucks, from the Dodge Hornet and Jeep Compass to the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
On the luxury side of the coin, customers can head alongside Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Grand Wagoneer at Stellantis dealers. If you prefer a vehicle that’s rugged and ready for adventure, there’s a Wrangler waiting for you to strip down the doors and fill your dashboard with rubber ducks.
Ram adding an SUV to its lineup seems similar to what happened when Land Rover was considering the idea of a sedan (Remember that?). I’m not sure it’s really necessary. That’s not to say that this future product won’t be well made, offer good power, and sell more than I expect.
As I said earlier, Ram knows her audience. The automaker brought back the Hemi V-8 engine. Customers cheered, third quarter sales numbers There has been a noticeable increaseAll this despite the fact that the Hemi V-8 is more expensive, less powerful and less efficient than the Hurricane’s twin-turbocharged inline-6.
However, none of this matters to the customer who wants a V-8 under the hood of his Ram truck. And it probably won’t matter to potential Ram SUV buyers that the Dodge Durango already exists. But it would be a bit funny if they used this model to revive the Ramcharger name. It’s a cool name from much of Dodge’s history, but if you had to tell people you bought a Ram Ramcharger, you’d look silly.
Regardless, I hope we eventually get an off-road-focused version of this Ram SUV. This way, we could see the return of the Trail Duster nameplate as well – which is a very fun name.
