The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee has an impressive new turbo-four engine

Stellantis has a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Called the Hurricane 4 Turbo, it was one of the first mass-produced engines to use a negative turbulent jet ignition (TJI) system. It produces 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, and we’ll first see it in the updated 2026 Grand Cherokee that Jeep also revealed today.

TJI uses a small “cup-like” pre-chamber above each cylinder to initiate the ignition. Once ignited, the burning fuel expands into the standard combustion chamber, where faster and more complete burning occurs. Stellantis says the engine uses 10 percent less fuel while producing 20 percent more power than the brand’s current 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The engine—with an aluminum block, oil pan, and timing cover—uses both port and direct fuel injection, features two spark plugs per cylinder, and has a variable geometry turbocharger that delivers up to 35 psi of boost. The compression ratio is 12:1 while running on regular 87 octane gasoline.

Stellantis says the engine produces 90 percent of its torque between 2,600 and 5,600 rpm, with 100 percent available from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm.
