Stop me if you’ve heard this before: A car company plans to replace its beloved sports car with an electric car, but is reconsidering that after the market slows. Porsche tried it with the 718 Boxster and Cayman. Now, the Alps may follow suit.
Iconic successor A110 The sports car, which was scheduled to be electric only, may now be joined by a combustion version – specifically a hybrid. In an interview with the UK EvoAlpine CEO Philippe Krief hinted that the next-generation sports car could come in gas-electric and hybrid versions.
Crave didn’t offer a clear explanation for the shift in strategy, but given the recent slowdown in demand for electric vehicles and the tepid response to electric sports cars, the move isn’t entirely surprising.
Crave says the new A110 – available in both hybrid and fully electric versions – is expected to arrive in early 2027. It will be available as a two-seat coupe, a convertible, and even a 2+2 configuration with rear seats. He also quipped that “the new car’s design will make the current car look old.”
While Alpine’s new combustion-powered sports car is exciting in its own right, the EV version shouldn’t be slow either. The electric coupe will have a dual-motor and rear-wheel drive system with more power than the 464 horsepower currently available in the car. A390 SUVs. It will also use a custom battery pack, with a target weight of less than 3,000 pounds.
Alpine also aims to make the battery pack fully replaceable, allowing owners to upgrade to newer batteries over time and avoid long-term degradation. When it hits the market, Alpine hopes the electric A110 will compete head-to-head with Porsche’s upcoming electric 718 Boxster and Cayman.
