Toyota hints at a new GR model for America. Is it a supercar?

About a year ago, Toyota subtly hinted at the return of the Celica and MR2 in an episode of the animated series GRIP. Sports cars appeared on the whiteboard Celica Mk8 and MR2 Mk4a clear reference to the next generation models. Also on the list was the GR GT3, the car we’ll finally see unveiled in production form on December 4.

The anime series is now back with a new episode, and there is definitely another teaser to suggest Toyota It will expand the Gazoo Racing lineup. At the end of the roughly 10-minute video, another list appears: GR Supra, GR86, GR Corolla, and GR (blank). The clip ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the name of the fourth model unrevealed and sparking a lot of speculation.

It’s unlikely that this will be the GR Yaris, because it would be too late to launch this hatchback in the United States. The current generation has been around since 2020 and has obtained Face lift last year, indicating that it is nearing the end of its life cycle.

Normally, we would rule out the Celica and MR2 as no prototypes of either were spotted during testing. However, given Toyota’s previous reference to both cars in a previous GRIP episode, we can’t be completely sure. After all, traders in the US allegedly watched Silica is reborn Behind closed doors, the test mules have already hit the road.

The GR86 and Supra will eventually get next-gen models, but since both are already on the list, Toyota is clearly hinting at something else.

Toyota previously told our sister site InsideEVs That production version of 2023 FT-Se concept It will arrive sometime after 2026, so it’s probably too early to start teasing that dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric sports car.

So, what could it be? Given GR GT3 It will debut in a few weeks, and the timing seems perfect to hint at the upcoming supercar. We already know it will feature a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, and there may be a Lexus version based on Sports concept.

But what if it isn’t? Toyota could surprise everyone with a GR Sienna or GR Prius; I’m just kidding. What makes more sense is that Gazoo Racing could apply its performance expertise to SUVs or trucks. A GR Land Cruiser or GR Tacoma would certainly be interesting, but logic points to a supercar or Celica. After all, the covered car that was briefly shown earlier in the video has a distinct coupe silhouette.

Whatever the case, one thing seems increasingly certain: Toyota is preparing to add a fourth GR model to the US market.
