A Mazda CX-5 owner who brought his car in for service was surprised by the offer made by a dealer.
TikTok user Riley (@y2knewsfeed) posted a viral clip showing how much money they wanted for the CX-70, even after taking into account the trade-in value of the CX-5.

“I must be living under a rock,” Riley begins, “because when in the world did these vehicles get so expensive?” Riley says he took his car to the dealership’s service center for scheduled maintenance.
In 2022, Riley needed an oil and tire change, which would take an estimated three hours. Riley says he brought his computer so he could work from the store. While he waited, he received a text from the sales team asking if he wanted to inspect a new car.
The Mazda CX-70 caught his attention
Riley said that although he was not actively looking for a new car, a larger vehicle might fit his lifestyle better. the CX-70 It is much larger than its CX-5 and has additional amenities like climate controls for rear passengers and has a more spacious cargo area with the option of a third row. The test drive also convinced Riley that the CX-70 might be a good fit. He also thought the CX-70’s MSRP was “reasonable.”
However, that changed once he sat down with the salesperson and started “talking numbers.” He says he told a sales associate he was interested in trading in his CX-5 and applying the stock to his CX-70 crossover. “So he runs the numbers and all that jazz. He goes and talks to his people, and then he comes back and hands me something,” Riley says.
The information sheet shown to Riley lists different monthly payment options for the CX-70. He was surprised.
“Literally, not one of the monthly payment options, no matter how long the loan was. He offered 48, 60, 72, and 84 months. Plus $4,000, $6,000, and $8,000 down. These were all on this table. And none of those options for a monthly payment were less than $1,000.”
How much does a Mazda cost?
Once you crunch the numbers with some of the information provided by Riley, the cost significantly exceeds that of the CX-70 PHEV, which starts at $54,400. price. He called the numbers “crazy,” noting that his current CX-5 payments are about $600 a month. “This is kind of like where I feel comfortable spending. Like I’m not trying to go crazy. I knew that…the car was going to be more expensive than what I currently have. And I know the economy isn’t great. But I didn’t expect it to be double or triple the current amount I’m paying,” he says.
Furthermore, he says one payment plan was $1,800 per month. “Who can afford that? Who pays that? Who pays $1,200 a month for a Mazda?” he asks. “Not me.” He admits that while he loves the car, he doesn’t think it’s worth that much.
Riley says he ultimately broke off negotiations because he didn’t want to pay much more than his current payments.
