Toyota has issued a massive recall affecting more than a million vehicles. It may have a defect that prevents the rearview camera from displaying properly on the infotainment screen if the driver performs certain actions too soon after starting the vehicle.
According to Recall reportequipped with an electronic parking assistant control unit, may encounter two problems. The software can cause the rearview image to freeze when Reverse is selected within a specified time frame after starting the vehicle, or the image may not be displayed at the next start if the vehicle is started and then turned off within a specified time.
Toyota It began investigating the potential problem in April 2024 after receiving field reports in Japan. During testing, the automaker discovered a software issue and decided, late last month, to issue a recall because the vehicles may fail to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards.
The automaker found that if the car is shifted into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, the screen may freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. This is enough time for another car or child to cross the opposite lane of the vehicle. The inactive display problem occurs when two operations to write the camera’s optical alignment data at a rate of 23 milliseconds occur randomly within the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.
