When CX-50 first appeared in 2023, there were whispers that the new compact Mazda might might replace the best-selling CX-5. But as it confirms the arrival of 2026 CX-5, this is not the case. In fact, Mazda’s executive officials insist that compact SUV can live together in complete harmony.

“We believe in coexistence between these two (two cars) because this is the largest part of the industry,” Meissterfeld notes. “We see clients who tend more towards the advanced urban direction-which is clearly CX-5. But we also see the most rugged and more directed client to the adventure in CX-50.”
“We see them completely coexist next to each other,” Meissterfeld continues. “In fact, I think we have a unique suggestion here as one of the very few companies – if not the only – that offer these two different options in this sector.”
It is difficult to disagree. Mazda sold more than 134,000 example on CX-5 in 2024 and more than 80,000 CX-50s, which places it in the first and third place on the auto-sales plan, respectively. Only Subcompact CX-30 ended better than CX-50.

This year also represents the first full year of sales for the new CX-50 Hybrid engine, which combines the Toyota Hybrid system with the four-liter company engine. As we note in our review, CX-50 is more efficient It should only help boost sales.
Mazda has already confirmed the arrival of CX-5 hybrid in 2027, but it will not use the Toyota unit itself as CX-50.
